Ah, episode 5. I have to admit that this is the episode that finally convinced me to keep blogging about BakuTen. After I saw David’s caps, I realized that this show deserved another shot. Anyway, Meg is gathering info on a swank school for rich girls because boss Bai Lan has a coworker whose daughter went nuts after attending the school. At first Meg finds nothing worth noting, aside from the school’s shoujo manga tendencies, but that’s probably because she is busy thinking with her stomach. The crew forces “wage slave” Kyohei to crossdress-cosplay in order to feed Meg and provide her with a camera, and Meg doesn’t disappoint. She hits the mother lode of info, grabbing shots of cakes, the women’s restroom, and a crazy three-fingered mutant in the school. Jo shows up in a school outfit to save the day.
This episode was so good on a variety of levels, especially for one with diminished expectations. There is even a bit of philosphy mixed in, when Meg tells the suicidal Rei Ayanami clone:
Humans are born in order to have tons of fun… You know what happens when you jump off a building? Your head bursts open, and your brains go flying and turn into rotting waste… Dying doesn’t solve anything. You just become a worthless carcass.
Wow, now that’s poetic. Who says Meg is all bust and no brains?
