It’s not very often you see Kakashi get beat versus another ninja, but Kakashi finds himself badly outmatched as Itachi uses his Sharingan to the fullest ability and puts Kakashi in Tsukuyomi, and Kakashi experiences a 72 hour mental torture. On top of this, Asuma and Kurenai are unable to help him as Kakashi warns them to keep their eyes shut to avoid the Tsukuyomi technique.
After going through the mental torture, Kakashi manages to expose the true motives of Itachi, as he and Kisame are part of a terrorist group called Akatsuki, and their purpose is to gather various powerful justus and techniques. Their purpose in Konoha: to go after the chakra of the Nine-Tailed Fox in Naruto. Fortunately for Naruto, Jiraiya convinced him to tag along on his mission to find Tsunade by offering to teach him a technique more powerful than Chidori.
It seems so strange to see Kakashi get pwned soooo badly considering how much he knows, but I guess there’s only so much you can do versus a bloodline technique. Gai finally makes his return to save the gang at the end, but he doesn’t get as much airtime 
It would have been interesting to see how he matched up against Kisame and Itachi considering Itachi had weakened a bit after using Tsukuyomi, and Kisame was caught completely off guard by Gai’s entrance.
