Jubei-chan 2 Review

by Kabitzin on April 11, 2004 in Jubei-chan 2,Reviews

I’m a little slow on the review of this series, since the April releases have been eating up my time. Anyway, Jubei-chan 2 is pretty enjoyable, but probably not a series for everyone. Especially at the beginning, I really felt like I would have benefitted greatly if I had watched the first season; the humor is a bit strange, and there is a whole inside-joke feel to the comedy. Additionally, the pacing is a inconsistent as it jumps from slow and sad to wacky and frenetic quite frequently. In the end, the characters were all pretty likeable, and I started to understand the humor a lot better. The great action scenes (like the ribbon parachuting fight) and the rocking violin music helped a lot as well. Everyone is rather irreverent, however, and there are frequent references to the writers and the first series. It was a little jarring at first, but eventually I got used to it. I was pleasantly surprised that many of the loose ends were actually tied up in the finale. Overall, I’d say Jubei is an above average series that will appeal greatly to some people, and probably not at all to others. As a side note, the Solar fansubbing was one of the best jobs I’d ever seen, as they include great translation notes at the end, and even translate the funky Russian parts!
